What to see and do in Villanueva de Viver

Villanueva de Viver
Village
Villanueva de Viver is a mountain municipality of El Alto Mijares, in the province of Castellón, on the border with Teruel; it has 94 inhabitants and is Spanish-speaking, with legally recognised linguistic predominance. Until 1916 it was called Villanueva de la Reina, after the death nearby, from the plague, of Queen Leonor of Portugal, on 30 October 1348; in 1368 it was repopulated by Christians and came under the barony of Jérica. It preserves a modest parish church, dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, from the late 17th and early 18th centuries, with a single nave and a high choir with balustrade, and the hermitage of San Martín and Santa Bárbara, from 1656, a kilometre from the town centre. Next to the recreation area of the Fuente del Collao a butterfly protection initiative operates.

Hermitage of San Martín y Santa Bárbara de Villanueva de Viver
Monument
Hermitage built in 1656 in late Gothic and Renaissance style, remodelled in the 18th century, located next to the CV-207 road one kilometre from the village of Villanueva de Viver. Listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (a local-level heritage protection category), it is small in size, with a single nave, an attached porch and a yard on its right-hand side. It has rubble masonry with reinforcing ashlar, an atrium with three semicircular arches of which only the central one remains open, and a red-tiled gabled roof. Inside, covered by a barrel vault, a fired-clay floor dated 1859 stands out, which depicted on one tile a sundial that has since disappeared. Its state of conservation is poor; the clavarios (lay custodians) of the saint are responsible for its upkeep.
