What to see and do in Montán

Montán
Village
Montán is a municipality of El Alto Mijares, in Castellón, mostly Spanish-speaking, bordering Montanejos, Cirat, Torralba del Pinar, Higueras, Caudiel and Fuente la Reina. After the expulsion of the moriscos in 1609 it was repopulated by twenty-nine families from Provence and nine Servite friars, who founded the surviving convent; the settlement charter was signed in 1612, the year in which Montanejos, until then a dependency, gained its independence. The convent, disentailed in the 19th century, was fortified by the Carlists until the liberals took it by storm in May 1840. The historic centre, with its medieval streets, preserves a watchtower and remains of the walls of the Muslim castle, as well as the church of San Bernardo, from the 18th century. It has 429 inhabitants.
