Festivities of Montanejos Activity · Montanejos, El Alto Mijares, Castellón Image of Montanejos, not of the place itself. Patron saint festivities of Montanejos, a town of Castellón in El Alto Mijares of Muslim origin, from when the farmstead of Muntan as-sufla existed. They are held in the first week of September, and it is on the Tuesday of that week that they are dedicated to the Virgen de los Desamparados, with a solemn mass in her hermitage, located in the hamlet of La Alquería a kilometre from the town centre, preceded by a procession in which the image of the Virgin is carried out. The hermitage, from 1669 although remodelled in the 18th century, has a single nave with small side chapels and a main altar presided over by the Virgin, flanked by Saint Joseph and the Immaculate Conception; its Baroque bell tower, with two tiers topped by a small pyramidal roof, displays a base of 17th–18th-century tiles with rosette motifs.
