What to see and do in Puebla de Arenoso

Puebla de Arenoso
Village
Puebla de Arenoso is a mountain municipality of the Alto Mijares comarca, in the province of Castellón, next to the Arenós reservoir, at 626 metres above sea level, in a valley of the río Mijares. It has 169 inhabitants and includes the hamlets of Los Calpes, Los Cantos and La Monzona. Its origin goes back to the lordship of Arenós, founded after the vassalage that the last Almohad governor of Valencia, Zayd Abu Zayd, agreed in 1229 with James I: his daughter married Blasco Eximénez de Tarazona, whose descendants took the surname Arenoso. The village received its settlement charter on 8 August 1317; in 1462 its castle was besieged and dismantled by Valencian forces. In 1464 King John II confiscated the barony of Arenós and incorporated the place into the Crown.
Reservoir of Arenós
Nature
The Arenós reservoir, also called Arenoso or Campos, is situated on the bed of the río Mijares as it passes through the municipalities of Montanejos and Puebla de Arenoso, in the Alto Mijares. It is an embankment dam made of loose materials, of rockfill with a clay core, built between 1970 and 1977, 109 metres high, about 500 metres thick at the base and 428 metres long at the crest; it covers 418 hectares and stores up to 136.9 hm³, making it the second-largest reservoir in the Comunitat Valenciana by capacity. It was built to regulate the río Mijares and irrigate 27,000 hectares of La Plana de Castellón, and belongs to the Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar. Beneath its waters lay the vanished village of Campos de Arenoso, evacuated on 15 July 1977, along with several districts of Puebla de Arenoso.
Los Calpes
Curiosity
Los Calpes is one of the hamlets of La Puebla de Arenoso, in the Alto Mijares comarca, and preserves an old quarter that occupies practically the whole settlement. Its parish church, dedicated to the Virgen del Rosario, was rebuilt in the 1990s, keeping the site of the earlier church. Nearby, notable landscapes include the Cabezo, the Collao and the Morrón de Campos, with views over the Arenós reservoir, as well as picnic areas next to the Fuente de Artiguillas and the Fuente del Rosario. The economy, traditionally based on dryland farming and almond growing, is now complemented by rural tourism. The patronal festivities, in honour of the Virgen del Rosario and San Roque, are held in the first half of August with children's events, bands and sports tournaments.
Los Cantos
Curiosity
In the mid-19th century, the hamlet of Los Cantos, already then part of Puebla de Arenoso, had 31 inhabitants according to Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico. In 2025 the population entity of Los Cantos had just 9 inhabitants, one of the scattered settlements, along with Los Calpes and La Monzona, that make up the municipality.
The settlement charter of Puebla de Arenoso
Historical milestone
The lord of the valley granted in 1317 a settlement charter with special privileges to attract residents to a place of rugged mountain; the document organized the territory and the dues of the town beside the Mijares.
The incorporation of the barony of Arenós into the Crown
Historical milestone
Two years after the Valencian forces besieged and dismantled the castle during the Catalan civil war, John II confiscated the barony from its lords in 1464 and incorporated it into the royal patrimony.
The gaches of Puebla de Arenoso
Food and drink
A thick porridge of flour cooked with oil and accompanied by pieces from the pig slaughter, food of shepherds and day laborers; the village keeps it alongside the ollas and the homemade longaniza and black pudding.
