What to see and do in Arañuel

Arañuel
Village
Arañuel is a Spanish-speaking municipality in the Alto Mijares, in the west of the province of Castellón, on the banks of the Mijares river, whose waters irrigate the village's orchards and form natural pools as they pass through the meanders. 80% of its municipal area is upland forest of Aleppo pine, maritime pine and holm oaks. Settled since the year 786, in Muslim times, it was conquered by James I, who kept the Muslim population and granted the lordship to the Vallterra family; at the expulsion of the Moriscos it had about 400 inhabitants. It has lost population through emigration since the 19th century and today has 148 inhabitants; it lives from orchard and dry farming, timber extraction and rural tourism. It preserves the church of San Miguel and, next to it, the hermitage of San Roque.
Natural pools of Arañuel
Nature
The natural pools of Arañuel are pools formed by the meanders of the río Mijares as it passes through the town (Alto Mijares, Castellón). The three closest to the town centre are the del Puente (Bridge) pool, about 150 metres away, the del Pozo (Well) pool, 200 metres away, and the de los Chorros or los Caños (Chutes/Spouts) pool, 300 metres away. Next to the del Puente pool there is a sports area with five-a-side football and frontennis courts, as well as the Pechina fountain.
Festivities of Arañuel
Activity
Arañuel combines several festive dates: Santa Quiteria on the 23rd of May, San Roque on the 29th of September and, in mid-August, the Fiesta de los Veraneantes (Summer Visitors' Festival) with a pilgrimage to the Ermita de San Roque, 500 meters from the village.
Hermitage of San Roque de Arañuel
Monument
The Hermitage of San Roque stands in the municipal district of Arañuel, next to the church of San Miguel, and is one of the buildings of architectural interest in the town's religious heritage. In his honour a festival is held every August in two parts: the bajada (descent), at midday, when the saint is received on his way from the hermitage, and the subida (ascent), when the image returns there in a pilgrimage.
Church of San Miguel de Arañuel
Monument
The parish church of San Miguel, on the plaza Mayor of Arañuel, a municipality known for its natural pools on the river Mijares, is a place of worship listed as a Bien de Relevancia Local (a local-level heritage protection category). It is a simple 17th-century building in the Neoclassical style with Corinthian-order features, with a single-nave plan about fifteen metres long, with interconnected side chapels decorated with plasterwork. As a curious detail, the parish centre preserves a monstrance stand also dating from the 17th century.
