What to see and do in Zucaina

Zucaina
Village
Zucaina is a Spanish-speaking municipality of the Alto Mijares, in the province of Castellón, set in a hollow of hazel, walnut and almond trees at the foot of the Peñagolosa massif, with 171 inhabitants (INE 2025). Of Arab origin, its name comes from sukaina, 'little house next to the spring'. In its municipal area remains of Iberian settlements and pottery from the 6th and 5th centuries BC have been found at La Escudilla and Los Cabañiles, which hold the largest concentration of petroglyphs in the comarca and the Iberian necropolis of Los Cabañiles, with its burial mounds. The morisco expulsion edict of 1609 emptied the locality of its residents, who have gradually returned. Every 26 July the slice of Santa Ana bread is blessed and shared among the residents.
Festivities of Zucaina
Activity
Every 26th of July, the feast of Santa Ana, Zucaina blesses and distributes among the residents the rebanada de Santa Ana, a sweet made with walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds from the municipality.
Hermitage of Santa Ana de Zucaina
Monument
Hermitage dedicated to the patron saint of Zucaina, in the province of Castellón, built at the end of the 18th century about four kilometres from the village, on the way to Montanejos, next to the Santa Ana ravine, a tributary of the Villahermosa river, and a spring of fresh water. According to tradition, it was built after the saint appeared to a shepherdess from the nearby farmhouses. A plaque recalls that she saved the population from cholera at the end of the 19th century. Every 1 May a pilgrimage is held from the village with two solemn masses and market stalls, and on 26 July, the feast of San Joaquín and Santa Ana, a flatbread known as the rebaná is handed out to those attending. In recent years its façade and interior have been restored.
Hermitage of Santa Bárbara de Zucaina
Monument
15th-century hermitage refurbished in the 18th, of simple structure with masonry, a bell-gable and eaves of Morisco tradition, located in the upper part of Zucaina, next to the sports court and one of the village's water tanks. Around 1994 residents restored its roof and façade to bring back its original appearance. Until the early 2000s, Palm Sunday mass was celebrated there, followed by a procession down to the square of the parish church, a custom that was discontinued owing to the difficulty of the climb for older people.
Petroglyphs of Zucaina
Monument
A group of seven petroglyphs open to visitors, part of the fourteen found in the municipal district, making up the largest concentration of carvings of this kind in the comarca.
Iberian necropolis of Los Cabañiles
Nature
An archaeological site in Zucaina with an important group of Iberian burial mounds, part of a cultural route that also takes in the hermitage of Santa Ana and the municipality's petroglyphs.
The depopulation of Zucaina by the expulsion of the Moriscos
Historical milestone
Philip III's expulsion edict, in 1609, emptied this village of the upper Mijares of its inhabitants, as it did much of the comarca; the demographic recovery took generations and the municipality was left marked by abandoned farmsteads and terraces.
The Santa Ana slice
Food and drink
A sweet that is blessed and distributed among the residents every 26 July at the festivities of Santa Ana; the district also provides walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds, the basis of the baking of these mountains.
