What to see and do in Torrechiva

Torrechiva
Village
Torrechiva is one of the smallest municipalities of El Alto Mijares, in the province of Castellón, with 106 inhabitants (INE 2025) and streets of Arab layout; its Spanish speech, of the churra area, preserves an Aragonese substratum. It was a settlement of Arab origin conquered by James I in the 13th century, and had a morisco community until its expulsion, which reduced it to sixteen households in 1646; until the 19th century it belonged to the duchy of Villahermosa. It preserves the remains of the castle of Muslim origin, from the 11th century, which gives the locality its name, the parish church of San Roque, from the 19th century and of plain Baroque style, and an ethnological museum founded in 1988 by two residents and devoted to traditional ways of life and work.
Forests of Torrechiva
Nature
Woods of pine and holm oak in the municipal district of Torrechiva, beside the irrigated citrus groves.
Festivities of Torrechiva
Activity
Torrechiva honours San Antonio with a procession in which animals are blessed and blessed bread rolls and wine are handed out, along with a bonfire, and San Roque, patron saint of the municipality, on 14 August. In mid-August, around the Virgen de Agosto (Our Lady of August), open-air dances, contests and bull-running events are organised, feasts reputed to be among the best in the comarca of Alto Mijares at that time of year.
Torre Chiva
Monument
Circular tower of the 13th century, of Arab origin, in the old quarter of Torrechiva, which gives the municipality its name. Its function is not clear: it may have been part of a Muslim farmstead (alquería) or a watchtower over the passage formed by the river Mijares next to the village. Today it is embedded in the old town, attached on both sides to houses that reveal only part of its structure, and it is the only standing remnant of the old 11th-century Muslim castle, now in ruins.
Church of San Roque de Torrechiva
Monument
19th-century church in an unadorned Baroque style, in the core of streets of Arab layout in Torrechiva, very similar to other churches in the region. It has a single nave, with attached outbuildings and a bell tower, and is dedicated to San Roque.
Ethnological Museum of Torrechiva
Monument
A museum founded in 1988 by two residents of Torrechiva, devoted to the traditional ways of life and work of the municipality.
