What to see and do in el Pinell de Brai

El Pinell de Brai
Village
El Pinell de Brai is a municipality in the Terra Alta comarca, in the province of Tarragona, with 948 inhabitants (INE 2025), with very rugged relief due to the Pàndols and Cavalls mountain ranges. The urban centre sits atop a rocky peak, next to remains of the old castle of Pinell, already mentioned in 1150 in the donation by Ramon Berenguer IV to the Templars. Known for its modernist cooperative winery by Cèsar Martinell, part of its municipal area lies in the Serra de Pàndols, where in August 1938, during the Battle of the Ebro, some of the fiercest fighting of the Civil War took place, until the Republican army collapsed when the defences of Cavalls were broken.
Cooperative Winery of el Pinell de Brai
Monument
The Celler Cooperatiu del Pinell de Brai, known as the cathedral of wine for the resolution of some of its structural elements, is a modernist work declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), commissioned from the architect Cèsar Martinell i Brunet, a disciple of Antoni Gaudí, and built between 1918 and 1922 for the Agricultural Cooperative Union of Pinell de Brai. It is located on the outskirts of the town, next to the road, and combines a winery and an oil mill in three naves, the central one of double width, covered with parabolic brick arches. Its monumental façade, in three sections and three levels, displays a frieze of glazed ceramic by Xavier Nogués with allegories of the vine and the olive tree, between a stone base and a cornice topped with brick pinnacles.
Fort on the Watchtower of Llixem
Monument
The fort at the talaia de Llixem is a work in Pinell de Brai (Terra Alta) declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It is a musket tower on a hill beside the Ebro River, between the municipalities of Pinell de Brai and Miravet. Its typology, very similar to other musket towers in the area, suggests it may be a 19th-century construction, raised during the Carlist Wars; some stretches of wall with loopholes survive.
El Pinell de Brai Winter Main Festival
Activity
El Pinell de Brai celebrates its Festa Major d'Hivern in honour of Sant Antoni Abat on 17 January, with the Festa de la Clotxa, a popular street parade, blessing of animals and traditional sweets, in addition to its Festa Major d'estiu for Sant Llorenç in August.
Hermitage of el Pinell de Brai
Monument
The hermitage of el Pinell de Brai is that of Santa Maria Magdalena, in the municipality of el Pinell de Brai (Terra Alta), near the monument to the combatants of the Serra de Pàndols of 1938, the final episode of the Battle of the Ebro, the last major military action of the Spanish Civil War, in which the Serra de Pàndols and the Serra de Cavalls marked the front line. Every year a pilgrimage is held to the hermitage on the second Saturday after Holy Week. It is reached by the road linking el Pinell with Gandesa, about two kilometres from the latter town.
Trail of els celler modernistes de la Terra Alta
Curiosity
The route runs through the cooperative wine cellars in Modernista style of the Terra Alta, including those of Pinell de Brai and Gandesa. The Pinell de Brai building was built in 1918 and the one in Gandesa the following year, both the work of the Modernista architect Cèsar Martinell. The Pinell de Brai cellar also preserves decorative frescoes painted by Xavier Nogués.
Battles of Hill 705 in the Sierra de Pàndols
Historical milestone
In August 1938 the summit of the sierra changed hands repeatedly in the harshest episode of the battle of the Ebro, with artillery and aircraft pounding the bare rock. On the height a monument to the combatants was raised half a century later.
