What to see and do in Rasquera

Rasquera
Village
Rasquera is a municipality in the Ribera d'Ebre, in the province of Tarragona, on the border with the Baix Ebre, at 176 metres of altitude. It has 786 inhabitants and is known for the Abric de la Caparrella, a rock shelter with Levantine rock art paintings, the work of Epipalaeolithic hunter-gatherers dating from between 10,000 and 6,500 years ago; it preserves a single image, a female kid goat, and forms part of the Prehistoric Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998. The village also has the Gauss relay station, installed in 1951. Its economy is based on olive oil growing and other Mediterranean crops; local pastries include pastissets, filled with cabello de ángel, chocolate or orange.
Rock Shelter of la Caparrella
Nature
The Caparrella rock shelter, in the municipality of Rasquera (Ribera d'Ebre, Tarragona), preserves Levantine rock art dated to the Epipalaeolithic, between 10,000 and 6,500 years ago: a figure of a female goat, a species with strong symbolic weight for the human groups who depicted it. The shelter was discovered in 1999 by Katja and Manfred Bader, during a survey campaign led by Anna Alonso and Alexandre Grimal, and since 1998 it has formed part, together with other sites of the Mediterranean Arc, of the Unesco World Heritage. The difficult access to the site makes a direct visit to the original painting inadvisable.
Rasquera Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Rasquera is celebrated from 1 to 5 August in honor of Sant Domingo. It stands out for having one of the oldest and most traditional correfocs (fire-runs) in the southern regions of Catalonia, with its emblematic beast, the Fardatxo de Rasquera, running through the streets alongside devils (diables) and drummers (tabalers).
Mountain range of Cardó
Nature
The Serra de Cardó is a mountain formation of the Pre-Coastal range, in the Baix Ebre, rising above Rasquera and Tivissa, in the Ribera d'Ebre. Together with the Serra del Boix, it forms the Cardó massif, which descends towards the Ebro to the west and borders the Serra de Tivissa to the east. The ridge culminates at the Creu de Santos, 942 metres high, with other peaks such as the punta de l'Agulla (687 m) and the Picossa (766 m); old paths cross it, such as the portell de Cosp, towards Rasquera and Móra d'Ebre. The Cardó-Boix ranges are included in the Plan of Natural Interest Areas of the Generalitat de Catalunya, and in the heart of the massif, accessible from Rasquera, lies the old Cardó spa, currently being converted into a hotel.
Desert of Cardó
Historical milestone
In 1606 the Discalced Carmelites founded in these mountains a desert, with a convent and some fifteen isolated hermitages for the retreat of the friars. The complex was abandoned in the nineteenth century and its spring afterwards fed a spa.
White goat of Rasquera
Food and drink
A native white-coated breed, found in several comarcas of southern Catalonia -the Baix Camp, the Baix Ebre, the Ribera d'Ebre and the Terra Alta, in addition to the now-extinct flock of the Montsià-, which takes its name from the municipality of Rasquera. Little is known of its origin, though oral tradition confirms it already existed in the early 20th century; by around the middle of that century it numbered some 30,000 head, now reduced to barely 5,000, concentrated in the most mountainous areas. It is in serious danger of extinction due to the lack of generational succession on farms. It is used mainly for the production of milk-fed kid, with an intense flavour, and its milk is used to make fresh and cured cheeses from the area.
