What to see and do in Bot

Bot
Village
Bot, on the banks of the Canaletes river, in the Terra Alta, has a very rugged relief marked by the Pàndols and Pesells mountain ranges. Built on a settlement occupied between the late Bronze Age and the Iberian period, with archaeological remains all around, the place is mentioned in 1153, as Buzot, within the jurisdiction of the Templar castle of Miravet; it belonged afterwards to the Templars and, from 1359, to the Hospitallers through their Comanda of Horta de San Juan, until the disentailment. In 1640, during the Reapers' War, Flemish and Walloon mercenaries of Philip IV plundered Bot and desecrated its church, and in the first Carlist war it was the retreat point for the Carlist forces that had besieged Gandesa. With 34.7 square kilometres, it is the second-smallest municipality in the comarca.
Bot Winter Main Festival
Activity
Bot celebrates its Festa Major d'Hivern on 2 and 3 February in honour of its patrons La Candelera and Sant Blai, with the traditional Danzada and the band's visit to the year's majorals and majorales.
Hermitage of Bot
Monument
The hermitage of Bot is that of Sant Josep, to the southeast of the village, on a small rise at the foot of the river Canaletes, with the rocks of la Plana, l'Agulla and del Migdia rising behind it.

Railway of the Val de Zafán
Historical milestone
The Val de Zafán railway was a 129-kilometre line between La Puebla de Híjar and Alcañiz, in Teruel, and Tortosa, in Tarragona, which was meant to be extended to the port of San Carlos de la Rápita, something that never happened. Works, begun in 1891, advanced in phases: the first stretch opened in 1895 and the extension to Tortosa was not completed until 1942, in the middle of the Civil War, a conflict in which the line played a logistical role during the Battle of the Ebro. Known locally as «el Sarmentero», it had a short life, with tunnels and viaducts cut through the gorges, and closed in 1973 after the collapse of a tunnel between el Pinell de Brai and Prat de Comte. Today much of its abandoned route is a greenway between els Ports and the Ebro.
Rancid wine and mistela of the Terra Alta
Food and drink
Sweet, oxidative preparations of household tradition: musts fortified with alcohol and wines aged in demijohns in the sun or in hogsheads for years. They are served with the pastissets and the festa major sweets.
