What to see and do in Benifallet

Benifallet
Village
Benifallet is a municipality in the comarca of Baix Ebre, in the province of Tarragona, situated on the banks of the Ebro River, at the foot of the Cardó massif, and is a popular spot among kayakers travelling the final stretch of the Ebro gorges. It has 706 inhabitants and its economy is based on agriculture, chiefly orange, olive and almond trees. The village's name has been documented since 1153; its castle passed in 1208 to Guillem de Cervera and in 1215 to the Templars. It retains a 13th-century Romanesque church, with two tombs from 1298 and 1300, and in the Cardó massif the ruins of the convent of San Hilario, founded in 1605 and suppressed in 1835, next to a spa that operated until 1967. The Meravelles cave is also found in the municipality.
Castle of Benifallet
Monument

Castle of Coll de Som
Monument
The Coll de Som castle crowns the highest point of the pass of the same name, at 251 metres, with a broad view of the Ebro valley over the Xerta-Tivenys weir. It is already mentioned in 1158 as the boundary of a donation to Tortosa cathedral, and some authors place here the old medieval town of Som. Today only walls of plain rendered masonry remain standing, with some ashlar blocks at the bases and corners, forming a small, narrow enclosure opened by loopholes; access is difficult, with no path or trail. The visible ruins correspond to observation posts built during the 19th-century Carlist Wars and the Civil War. It is declared a cultural asset of national interest.
