Cooperative Winery of el Pinell de Brai Monument · el Pinell de Brai, Terra Alta, Tarragona The Celler Cooperatiu del Pinell de Brai, known as the cathedral of wine for the resolution of some of its structural elements, is a modernist work declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), commissioned from the architect Cèsar Martinell i Brunet, a disciple of Antoni Gaudí, and built between 1918 and 1922 for the Agricultural Cooperative Union of Pinell de Brai. It is located on the outskirts of the town, next to the road, and combines a winery and an oil mill in three naves, the central one of double width, covered with parabolic brick arches. Its monumental façade, in three sections and three levels, displays a frieze of glazed ceramic by Xavier Nogués with allegories of the vine and the olive tree, between a stone base and a cornice topped with brick pinnacles.
