What to see and do in Corbera d'Ebre

Corbera d'Ebre
Village
Corbera d'Ebre is a town in the Terra Alta comarca, in the province of Tarragona, home to the Poble Vell, the old part of the town destroyed during the Battle of the Ebro by the bombings of the Italian air force and the Condor Legion, and preserved today as a site of memory, declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), with the church of San Pedro among its ruins. The village was rebuilt on the lower part of the hill, where the 115 días interpretation centre is located, dedicated to explaining the battle. Situated in the valley of the riu Sec, at 297 metres of altitude and with nearby mountain ranges exceeding 560 metres, it has 1,023 inhabitants (INE 2025). Among its residents, the physician Jaime Ferrán y Clúa (1851-1929) stands out.
Remains of the Walls of the Castle of Corbera d'Ebre
Monument
Remains of the castle of Corbera d'Ebre, documented since 1153 within the Templar donation of Miravet and the scene in 1293 of a battle between the Temple and the Entença family; the Civil War bombardments exposed a porticoed gallery with capitals of Templar tradition.
Rifleman's Fort of Ferriols
Monument
Rectangular-plan fort with chamfered corners and several rows of arrow slits symmetrically arranged on all its faces, built in the municipality of Corbera d'Ebre during the 19th-century Carlist wars as part of a defensive line with a perimeter moat about a hundred metres long. Built of rubble masonry, with walls 60 centimetres thick, it had three low-height levels and an interior of barely 4.5 by 5.4 metres. It is declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) and is reached across open fields.
Old Village of Corbera d'Ebre
Curiosity
Village destroyed during the Batalla de l'Ebre in 1938, listed as a cultural asset of national interest in 1993 and turned into a place of remembrance and a monument to peace.
Trail of la Batalla de l'Ebre per la Terra Alta
Curiosity
A route through the memorial sites of the Battle of the Ebro in the Terra Alta, centred on Corbera d'Ebre and the Camps de Batalla del 115. One of its stages is the Ruta de la Pau, a circular route through the Poble Vell of Corbera d'Ebre, the old quarter razed by bombing and declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), whose last residents left it in 2008. The route also passes through the Centro de Interpretación 115 Dies, opened that same year to explain the battle from a military standpoint, and through Art al Ras, a set of artworks scattered along the paths of the area, part of a network of sites on the Civil War spread across the whole of the Terra Alta.
Mountain range of Pàndols
Nature
The Serra de Pàndols is a limestone sierra in the Terra Alta (Tarragona) forming part of the Prelitoral range: steep and cut by deep ravines, it extends between the municipalities of Gandesa and el Pinell de Brai. Its highest point is the Puig Cavaller, at 706.2 metres. It was the scene of fighting in the Battle of the Ebro in 1938: the so-called cota 705, at Punta Alta, was a key position for dominating the whole sierra, and today a monument commemorates the massacre of Pàndols. It is protected within the Serres de Pàndols-Cavalls natural area.
Cassola de tros
Food and drink
Stew that the day labourers cooked in the fields over a fire of vine shoots, with rabbit, snails, potato and rice or noodles. It is still prepared at group meals and at the festivities of the villages of the interior of the comarca.
