What to see and do in Ginestar

Ginestar
Village
Ginestar is a municipality on the banks of the Ebro, in the comarca of the Ribera d'Ebre, with its baroque parish church. The town is set on the eastern bank of the river, on a sandbank known as la illa. Its name comes from the broom plant (ginesta), a shrub abundant in the area, after an old farmhouse known as Mas de la Ginesta, of Arabic origin. Conquered in the mid-12th century by Ramon Berenguer IV, it was ceded to the Templars, who granted a charter of settlement in 1206. Because of its flat location on alluvial land, it has been one of the villages most affected by the floods of the Ebro; in 1787, 123 houses collapsed. On the night of 24 July 1938, at the start of the Battle of the Ebro, the Republicans laid out a footbridge between Ginestar and Benissanet. It has 800 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Coats of Arms of the Parish Church of Ginestar
Monument
The coats of arms of the parish church of Sant Martí de Ginestar, declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest, decorate the main façade of the church, located in the town centre of Ginestar. Above the entrance portal, a round arch flanked by columns, an entablature bears a shield with the Maltese cross; higher up, another entablature supported by columns resting on corbels carved with human heads ends in a triangular pediment decorated with the village's coat of arms and the date 1784, today quite deteriorated.
Ginestar Main Festival
Activity
Main festival of Ginestar, in the Ribera d'Ebre comarca (Tarragona). It is consecrated to Sant Martí and is celebrated on the second Sunday of November. The municipality also celebrates the feast of Sant Isidre, on 15 May, with a fellowship meal at the hermitage dedicated to this saint.
Towpath of the Ribera d'Ebre
Curiosity
The Camí de Sirga de la Ribera d'Ebre is an old path alongside the Ebro river from which men used to pull boats upstream, in a river tradition that also used llaguts towed by mules, now vanished. The lower stretch of the Ebro, between Sástago and Riumar, is today part of the GR 99 long-distance footpath, which follows the course of the river to its mouth and has turned this old working path into a cycling and hiking route.
The llaüts and the navigation of the Ebro
Historical milestone
Until the arrival of the railway in the early 20th century, the Ebro was the great transport route of the Ribera d'Ebre: llaüts (flat-bottomed boats) carried wine, oil, coal and timber down from Ginestar towards Tortosa, and were hauled back upstream by towline, pulled by men and draft animals from the bank.
Sweet fruit of the ribera
Food and drink
The market gardens irrigated beside the channel produce peach, nectarine and plum that are picked between June and September. The traditional irrigation of waterwheels and channels allowed these crops in a dryland comarca dominated by olive and vine.
