What to see and do in Prat de Comte

Prat de Comte
Village
Prat de Comte is a small municipality in the Terra Alta, in the province of Tarragona, with 174 inhabitants, which preserves the medieval gateway known as Lo Portal. Located in the southeast of the comarca, on the border with the Ribera d'Ebre, it has rugged relief due to the proximity of the Tortosa-Beceite mountains; the Vía Verde de la Terra Alta passes through its territory, leading to the hermitage of la Fontcalda, where the village's patron saint is venerated. In the mid-19th century it had 372 inhabitants, and kept the name Prat de Compte until 1981, when it adopted its current Catalan form. It lives on agriculture, mainly olive, vine and cereals, and has a rural school that shares a school catchment area with Arnes and Caseres.
Lo Portal (The Gate)
Monument
Lo Portal is the original access gate to the village of Prat de Comte, declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It has a voussoired round arch in ashlar and brick in the lower part, which marks the ground level of earlier periods, and a segmental arch on the opposite side. The ceiling is a timber and brick frame, lower than the original. Inside, the entrance arches of the neighbouring houses can be made out, now blocked. The present arch dates from the 17th century, as can be read on one of its ashlar blocks.
Prat de Comte Winter Main Festival
Activity
Prat de Comte celebrates its winter festival in honour of Sant Antoni Abat on 17 January, with mass and the blessing of animals, a sweets auction and a popular clotxa meal; its actual festa major (the summer one) is that of Sant Bartomeu.
Hermitage of Prat de Comte
Monument
Hermitage in the municipal district of Prat de Comte.
Depopulation of the Terra Alta
Historical milestone
The Terra Alta, a comarca of twelve municipalities in the Terres de l'Ebre with Gandesa as its capital, went from more than twenty-three thousand inhabitants in 1920 to just over eleven thousand a century later, driven down by phylloxera, war and emigration to the coast. Several municipalities fell below two hundred residents, such as Prat de Comte, which had 372 inhabitants in the mid-19th century and has 174 today.
Dry-land snails
Food and drink
The snails gathered on the field margins after the rains are prepared a la llauna with oil and garlic, in spicy sauce or as an ingredient of the field stews. They are a dish for gatherings and for collective meals at the summer festivities.
