What to see and do in Miravet

Miravet
Village
Miravet is a town in the comarca of the Ribera d'Ebre, in the province of Tarragona, on the right bank of the river Ebro, on the border with the Baix Ebre and the Terra Alta. It has 703 inhabitants (INE 2025) and is dominated by its Templar castle, of Andalusi origin, transformed in the mid-12th century by the Order of the Temple into a castle-convent on a bend of the Ebro. In Cistercian Romanesque style with Islamic and Byzantine influences, it is one of the finest examples of Templar military and religious architecture in the West, together with that of Peñíscola. The old village, fitted to the rock below the castle, preserves narrow, arcaded streets and the old Moorish aljama. Alongside it, the river is crossed by the last original ferry of the Ebro that still runs without a motor.
Castle of Miravet
Monument
A fortress of Muslim origin dating from the 9th century, converted into a Templar castle-convent in 1153, seat of the Templar province of Catalonia and Aragon. Located on the summit of a hill about a hundred metres high, it is considered one of the finest examples of Templar military architecture in Catalonia and has been a cultural asset of interest since 1988. It is divided into the jussà enclosure, of Andalusi origin, walled on three levels, and the sovereign enclosure, from the 12th century, with five towers and outbuildings arranged like a Cistercian monastery adapted for military use: stables, cistern, refectory, cellar and chapter house. The Treasure Tower held the order's archive, and the Blood Tower commemorates the Templars executed there after the surrender of 1308.
Miravet Main Festival
Activity
Main Festival of Miravet (Tarragona), at the foot of the Templar castle, celebrated in honour of Our Lady of Grace, known as the templar, around 12 October. The festivities include dances and traditional events typical of the town's patron saint festival.
Viewpoint of Miravet
Nature
Viewpoint over the Ebro from the castle of Miravet, in the Ribera d'Ebre. It is located on top of a hill about a hundred metres high that dominates the village, from where the view takes in the course of the river at the foot of the fortress and the tiered houses of Miravet. It is one of the points from which the course of the Ebro through the comarca is best appreciated.
Conquest of Miravet and the Templar commandery
Historical milestone
The Andalusi fortress that dominated the crossing of the river surrendered in 1153 to Ramón Berenguer IV, who handed it to the order of the Temple. The Templars made it one of their richest commanderies and organised the settlement of the riverside.
Siege of Miravet and the end of the Temple
Historical milestone
When Jaime II ordered the Templars to be arrested, the garrison of the castle shut itself behind its walls and held out for more than a year, until the end of 1308. It was the order's last resistance in the Crown of Aragon before its dissolution.
