What to see and do in Almenar

Almenar
Village
Almenar is a town in the north of the Segrià, in Lleida, on the border with the Noguera and Aragon, with 3,369 inhabitants (INE 2025), which includes the settlement of La Bassa Nova. Its name comes from the Arabic al-menar, "watchtower for lighting beacon fires", documented as early as the 11th century. It was the scene, in 1642, during the war dels Segadors, of the siege in which Captain Jaume d'Algerri held out with about a hundred arquebusiers until the arrival of reinforcements, and, in 1710, during the War of the Spanish Succession, of the Battle of Almenar, in which the English cavalry of James Stanhope defeated the troops of Philip V before both pretenders to the crown. It lives from irrigated agriculture, with water from the Aragon and Catalonia canal, and from livestock farming. It preserves the castle and the church of Santa Maria, from the 14th century.
Church of Santa Maria d'Almenar
Monument
The church of Santa Maria d'Almenar is a Gothic building standing on Plaça Mayor in Almenar (Segrià), facing the town hall, on a hill with broad views over the comarca. Declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) in 2011, it was built in two stages: the first, in the first half of the 14th century, gave it its single Latin-cross nave with pentagonal apses and a sober ashlar façade with Gothic windows; in the 18th century the octagonal Baroque bell tower, about sixty metres tall, was added. During the War of the Reapers (guerra dels Segadors) the original dome was destroyed, and it was not rebuilt until after the Spanish Civil War, a conflict in which the wooden altarpiece and the organ were also burned.
Castle of Almenar
Monument
The castle of Almenar crowns a hill above the village of Almenar, in the Segrià (Lleida). Its name comes from the Arabic al-manar, signal tower, and its remains, stretches of wall and a central square-plan tower, date back to the Andalusi period. El Cid took it in 1085 as a strategic stronghold; after its definitive conquest in 1093, Count Ramon Berenguer IV promoted its colonisation in 1147 through grants to settlers. It served as a border fortress during the War of the Spanish Succession (1702-1714) and suffered damage again during the Spanish Civil War, being left badly deteriorated by around 1938. Today it survives in ruins and is protected as a cultural asset.
Battle of Almenar of 1710
Historical milestone
The Battle of Almenar was fought on 27 July 1710, during the most intense campaign of the War of the Spanish Succession, when the allied army of Archduke Charles, commanded by Marshal Guido Starhemberg with the Englishman James Stanhope as second-in-command, defeated the Bourbon troops of the Marquis of Villadarias, fighting on behalf of Philip V, on the plains beside the Noguera Ribagorçana. King Philip V had left Madrid on 3 May for the camp at Lleida, intending to conquer the stronghold of Balaguer after crossing the Segre; the allied army, reinforced with troops arriving from Italy and Dutch recruits, responded swiftly to these movements. The victory opened the road to Zaragoza for the Austracists.
