Castle of Almenar Monument · Almenar, Segrià, Lleida The castle of Almenar crowns a hill above the village of Almenar, in the Segrià (Lleida). Its name comes from the Arabic al-manar, signal tower, and its remains, stretches of wall and a central square-plan tower, date back to the Andalusi period. El Cid took it in 1085 as a strategic stronghold; after its definitive conquest in 1093, Count Ramon Berenguer IV promoted its colonisation in 1147 through grants to settlers. It served as a border fortress during the War of the Spanish Succession (1702-1714) and suffered damage again during the Spanish Civil War, being left badly deteriorated by around 1938. Today it survives in ruins and is protected as a cultural asset. Photo: Deosringas (CC BY-SA 3.0 es) What to see and do in Almenar
