What to see and do in Alguaire

Alguaire
Village
Alguaire is a town in the north of the Segrià, in the province of Lleida, with 3,060 inhabitants, in whose municipal territory lies Lleida-Alguaire airport. The town's castle, granted in 1186 to the Order of the Hospital, gave rise in 1250 to a convent of Hospitaller ladies which came to be part of the Grand Priory of Catalonia; of that castle and convent hardly any remains survive. The parish church of San Saturnino, from 1774, stands where a Romanesque temple once stood, and in the upper part of the village rises the sanctuary of the Virgin of Merli, of Visigothic origin, restored by the nuns in 1264 and with 16th-century murals recalling a clash between the convent and the county of Urgell.
Castle-Commandery of Alguaire
Monument
The Castell-comanda d'Alguaire was an Andalusi fortification (suda) reconquered by Ermengol VI of Urgell between 1145 and 1147, in the municipality of Alguaire, in the Segrià comarca (Lleida). In 1149 Ramon Berenguer IV began the donation of the territory to the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, which in 1186 obtained full control of the castle in exchange for other lands ceded by King Alfonso the Chaste. In 1250 a hospitaller convent was founded there, and in 1319, when the commandery was incorporated into the Priory of Catalonia, the barony of Alguaire was created. Today only remains of the wall, a square tower and the old church of Santa María survive, on a site excavated by the University of Barcelona.
Hospitaller monastery of Alguaire
Historical milestone
Founded in 1250 by the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, it was a female monastery and the head of a commandery that in 1319 became a barony. The nuns moved to Barcelona in 1651 and the community was extinguished in 2007.
