What to see and do in Albesa

Albesa
Village
Albesa is a municipality in the Catalan comarca of la Noguera, in the province of Lleida, with 1,584 inhabitants (INE 2025). Here, in 1003, took place the Battle of Albesa, in which the bishop of Elne died and Count Ermengol I of Urgell was taken prisoner; the castle remained under Saracen control until 1098. It received a charter of settlement in 1163 and was destroyed during the revolt of the Count of Urgell against Ferdinand of Antequera in the early 15th century; its ruins served as a parapet for the Carlists in 1836. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Mary and already recorded in the 12th century, completed its construction in 1790 and preserves a polychrome stone altarpiece from the second half of the 14th century, from the Lleida school. At El Romeral a Roman villa with mosaics was discovered in 1961, today a site open to visitors.
Parish Church of the Assumption of Albesa
Monument
The parish church of the Assumption of Albesa (Noguera, Lleida) is a simple, spacious temple, completed in 1790. It preserves a stone altarpiece from the second half of the 14th century, much earlier than the current building, considered the most outstanding piece of a group of altarpieces typical of the Lleida region, characterised by the contrast between ornate architectural decoration and more modest sculptural carving.
Castle of Albesa
Monument
Castle located on the tossal (hill) that overlooks Albesa (Noguera), also called castell del Cinto and declared a bien cultural de interés nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). In the year 1003 it was the scene of the Battle of Albesa, in which the count of Urgell Ermengol I was taken prisoner by Andalusian troops; during the 11th century it was an islamic hisn of strategic importance facing Lleida. After various conquests and cessions between counts of Barcelona, of Urgell and lineages such as the Cabrera and the Pinós, in 1415, at the beginning of the 15th century, Ferdinand of Antequera forced its surrender after the revolt of the pretender Jaume II d'Urgell, handing it over together with the town to his loyal Diego Fernández de Vadiello. In 1836 its ruins served as a parapet for the Carlist troops.
Battle of Albesa
Historical milestone
On 20 February 1003, the army of Count Ramon Borrell of Barcelona and his brother Ermengol I of Urgell, who were pursuing Abd al-Malik, son of Almanzor, to recover the spoils of a raid, was defeated near Albesa by the troops of this Andalusi warlord. Berenguer, bishop of Elne and younger brother of the future abbot-bishop Oliba, died in the battle, and Ermengol I was taken prisoner. The setback also triggered a new raid by Abd al-Malik al-Muzaffar, which ended with the destruction of the castles of Montmagastre, Meià and Castellolí. Historians disagree on its significance: while some consider it decisive for the vassalage of several Muslim towns, others point out that Albesa castle remained in Saracen hands until its definitive conquest in 1098.
