Church of Santa Maria d'Almenar Monument · Almenar, Segrià, Lleida The church of Santa Maria d'Almenar is a Gothic building standing on Plaça Mayor in Almenar (Segrià), facing the town hall, on a hill with broad views over the comarca. Declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) in 2011, it was built in two stages: the first, in the first half of the 14th century, gave it its single Latin-cross nave with pentagonal apses and a sober ashlar façade with Gothic windows; in the 18th century the octagonal Baroque bell tower, about sixty metres tall, was added. During the War of the Reapers (guerra dels Segadors) the original dome was destroyed, and it was not rebuilt until after the Spanish Civil War, a conflict in which the wooden altarpiece and the organ were also burned.
