What to see and do in Castillonroy

Castillonroy
Village
Castillonroy is a municipality of La Litera, in the province of Huesca, beside the Santa Ana reservoir, with 334 inhabitants (INE 2025) divided between the capital and the settlements of Piñana and Santa Ana, on the border with Catalonia. It owes its name to the hill of red earth on which stood the Muslim castle that gave rise to the village, today depicted on its coat of arms; Muslim rule extended from the 8th century until the town's reconquest in 1091 by the count of Urgel. Neolithic, Iberian and Roman settlements have been found within its boundaries. The baroque church of la Asunción preserves a bell from 1738, and on the Montpedró peak stands the Romanesque hermitage of San Salvador. During the Civil War it remained in Republican hands until 1938.

A reservoir on the border between the provinces of Huesca and Lérida, downstream from the Canelles reservoir, on the Noguera Ribagorzana river, on the boundary between La Litera and Catalonia. It has a capacity of 236.60 hm³ and is used for drinking water supply, electricity generation and irrigation. The old village of Tragó de Noguera was submerged beneath its waters. The dam was inaugurated on 12 November 1970, and in 2026 a water treatment plant was under construction. The reservoir feeds the Canal de Piñana, which supplies the city of Lérida and irrigates part of its comarca, and it also contributes part of the flow of the Aragón and Catalonia Canal.
