What to see and do in la Portella

La Portella
Village
La Portella is a municipality of 731 inhabitants (INE 2025) at 259 metres above sea level, in the Segrià, province of Lleida, on the boundary with the Noguera, to which it formerly belonged. Its economy is based on fruit farming -apples, peaches and pears- and livestock, alongside recent industrial estates. The Casa de Corregó, an old castle of medieval origin dating from the 11th century, belonged in 1393 to Guillem Ramon de Montcada, baron of Aitona, and in 1412 to the canon-sacristan of Lleida Joan Serrat; today only the original chapel survives, integrated into a fortified farmhouse declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It also preserves the church of San Pedro, remodelled in the 16th century with a Gothic rose window, and the Casal dels Teixidor, a neoclassical building known as Casa Gran.
Castle of Corregó
Monument
Corregó castle, in the municipal district of la Portella (Segrià), was a former fortified farmhouse of which today only a small chapel remains standing, incorporated into the large farmhouse known as Casa de Corregó, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). The farmhouse, rectangular in plan with a central courtyard, retains remains of medieval walls despite numerous refurbishments. In 1393 the castle belonged to Guillem Ramon de Montcada, baron of Aitona; in 1412 it passed to Joan Serrat, canon-sacristan of the see of Lleida, and held out during the war against John II without falling until the surrender of Lleida. In 1489 it passed to Caterina de Vilanova, a nun of Alguaire, remaining tied to that commandery until the abolition of the lordships.
