What to see and do in Algerri

Algerri
Village
Algerri is a municipality in the comarca of la Noguera, in the province of Lleida, at an altitude of 345 metres, with 424 inhabitants. Its castle is already recorded in documents from 1105, when it was still in Muslim hands; conquered between 1115 and 1130, it passed to the viscounts of Cabrera and, in 1546, to the monastery of Poblet, which held it until the disentailment. Before 1857 the municipality absorbed the depopulated hamlet of La Figuera, where the Romanesque chapel of San José or Sant Urbà is preserved, with its pointed vault. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Mary, is Gothic, remodelled in 1773, with three groin-vaulted naves and a Baroque façade. The district also preserves the castle of la Figuera and combines livestock farming and dry-land agriculture with irrigation from the Algerri-Balaguer canal.
Castle of Algerri
Monument
Castle declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's top heritage-protection category) atop the hill overlooking Algerri; in 1105, before its conquest from the Muslims around 1130, Count Pedro Ansúrez ceded it in freehold to Ramon Berenguer III and Almodis de Mortain.
Castle of la Figuera
Monument
Defensive tower declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), documented since 1153, when count Guerau Ponç III de Cabrera ceded it to Pere de Claramunt. It stands on a rock reached by stairs carved into the stone, in the depopulated hamlet of la Figuera, a former independent municipality until the mid-19th century, when it was incorporated into the term of Algerri. Beside the tower, in a settlement with the appearance of a vila closa (walled village) and a round gateway leading to a narrow street, stands the Romanesque church of Sant Josep, formerly dedicated to Sant Antoni Abat; its sacristy, from the 18th century, was built reusing old ashlars from the castle.
