Les Masies de Voltregà
Village
Les Masies de Voltregà is a municipality in the Osona comarca made up of scattered masies and settlements such as la Gleva, Vinyoles d'Orís and Sant Miquel d'Ordeix; it completely surrounds Sant Hipòlit de Voltregà, from which it separated in the late 18th century, and has 3,345 inhabitants (2025). Its history begins in the year 902; in the Middle Ages it was in the hands of the Castelló-Cabrera family, among them Sibil·la de Saga, and of Voltregà castle only remains survive next to the hermitage of Sant Martí Xic. In the territory stands the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu de la Gleva, documented since 1286, with a chapel from 1320-1345 and a Baroque temple consecrated in 1766. In 1714 it was the scene of the Fets de la Gleva, with the massacre of prisoners during the War of the Spanish Succession; Jacint Verdaguer lived there between 1893 and 1895.
Castle of Voltregà
Monument
A Romanesque castle of the 10th and 11th centuries, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), located in the municipality of Les Masies de Voltregà, in the comarca of Osona, whose jurisdictional district came to include also San Hipólito, Santa Cecilia de Voltregá and Sobremunt. The earliest records date from 902, and in the 11th century it belonged to the counts of Barcelona, who gave it as a wedding dowry to Countess Ermessenda de Carcasona. It later passed through the hands of the bishops of Vic, the Gurb-Queralt family, the house of Montcada and the viscounts of Cabrera, until in 1370 it was sold to the bishopric of Vic, which retained its lordship until the abolition of jurisdictional rights in the 19th century.
Conanglell
Monument
Conanglell is a hamlet in the municipality of Les Masies de Voltregà (Osona, Barcelona), located west of Torelló, on the left bank of the river Ter, in the meander that gives the place its name. It is documented from 1125, and in 1139, already in the 12th century, a fortified tower was built there, the origin of the fortified house that gives the spot its name. In the mid-19th century an army barracks was set up and the chapel of Santa Bárbara was built, single-naved, with a round-arched doorway and a bell-gable; the military left in the mid-20th century, and in the early 21st century the remains were demolished to build a neighbourhood of single-family homes. The chapel, unused for worship since the Second Republic, was turned into a livestock pen and is today abandoned.
Shrine of la Mare de Déu de la Gleva
Monument
Documented since 1286 and with a chapel built between 1320 and 1345, it was the setting in 1714 for the clashes known as the Fets de la Gleva during the War of the Spanish Succession. The present church was consecrated in 1766 and Jacint Verdaguer lived here between 1893 and 1895. Dedicated to an image found around the 13th century, it is the second most important shrine in Catalonia after that of Montserrat, with a centralized plan, chapels around it and a dome, reached by a grand staircase up to an arched doorway flanked by columns. The cambril where the image is venerated, with gilded vaults, is one of the most notable examples of late Catalan Baroque; its old altar was destroyed in 1936.
