What to see and do in Orís

Orís
Village
Orís is a small municipality in the northern part of the Osona comarca, in the province of Barcelona, located in the Ter valley, beside the road from Barcelona to Puigcerdà, with its seat at Can Branques. In 1840 it absorbed the former territory of Saderra, thus extending its boundaries to both sides of the river. It has 355 inhabitants. Overlooking the municipality, on a hill 751 meters high with sheer cliffs, stands Orís Castle, now in ruins, dating from the year 914 and declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), which was the center of a lordship that became a barony in 1396 and later a marquisate under the Orís lineage. At its foot, at an altitude of 703 meters, lies the parish of Sant Genís d'Orís. The municipality also preserves Saderra Castle.
Castle of Orís
Monument
Castle of the twelfth to seventeenth centuries situated on the summit of a steep rocky mount about 2 km from Orís, a small village in the comarca of Osona to which it gives its name. The first documents on the medieval stronghold date from the year 914, when it belonged to Berenguer I of Manlleu or of Orís, and from 1014 it remained linked to the family of Enrique de Orís, whose surname ended up definitively naming the fortification. It underwent its first alterations in the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries. During the first Carlist war it was besieged by the Baron of Meer and fell on 30 March 1838 when its garrison surrendered, remaining almost totally destroyed; only some walls, the cistern and the plan of the Romanesque chapel of Sant Pere are preserved.
Castle of Saderra
Monument
The castle of Saderra is a medieval fortification situated near the settlement of Saderra, in the municipality of Orís (Osona), declared a cultural asset of national interest. It has been documented since 1342, although the place name is already mentioned in 945, when the farmhouse and rural village of Saderra are referred to. Its remains are probably located on a hill west of the church of Sant Marcel, next to which the remains of a farmhouse that would have inherited the castle's name are also preserved. Near the church stands the Saderra farmhouse, a large manor house that preserves all the splendour of the old landed farmhouses, with spacious rooms, antique furniture, portraits and family documentation.
Bufet potato
Food and drink
The patata del bufet is a traditional Catalan produce with two varieties: the white one, the majority, and the purple or bufet negra one, arising from a mutation of the first that was preserved by local farmers; the white variety may derive from a French variety created in Brittany in the 19th century. It is a late variety, with a growing cycle of more than 150 days, thin skin and very buttery white flesh, cooked with the skin on or under embers. It is grown in an area running from Osona to the Garrotxa, the Ripollès, the Cerdanya, the Urgell and the Solsonès, and is sold mainly within that same area, particularly during the Mercat de la Patata del Bufet of Orís, held every October since 1994. It has been recognized by the slow food movement.
