What to see and do in Torelló

Torelló
Village
Torelló is a municipality in the comarca of Osona, in the province of Barcelona, situated at the confluence of the Ter and Ges rivers, on the northern edge of the plain of Vic where the first foothills of the Pre-Pyrenees begin. It grew up around the old nucleus of Sant Feliu de Torelló, already documented in the 11th and 12th centuries and renamed Torelló in the 13th century for lying within the district of its castle; its inhabitants are known by the nickname pescallunes. The flood of 17-18 October 1940 on the Ter and Ges rivers caused 46 deaths, 15 missing and 52 injured throughout the comarca, and in Torelló it forced the building in 1941 of the first houses for those affected, until in 1943 the reconstruction of the village was approved. It now has around 15,300 inhabitants.
Castle of Torelló
Monument
The castle of Torelló, also called castell dels moros, stands on the ridge of a small range of hills north of the plain of Vic, at 781 metres of altitude, overlooking the valley of Torelló and the river Ges. It served as a watch bastion and formed part of the defensive system that controlled the entrances and exits of the plain of Vic and of Catalonia towards the north, in this sector of the Pyrenees. From its location, some 250 metres above the valleys of the Ges and the Ter, the whole plain of Vic and its foothills are visible, from the sierras of Bellmunt, Curull and Puigsacalm to the Montseny, and to the north the valley of the Ter and the high peaks of the Puigmal, the Pedraforca and the Tossa d'Alp.
Torelló Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Torelló is celebrated from 24 July to 2 August in honour of Sant Feliu, patron of the town, with events such as the Porronada, the Dansa de Torelló and the Festa del Batre i la civada (threshing and oats festival).
1940 flood of the Ter and Ges
Historical milestone
The flood of October 1940 devastated the banks of the Ter and the Ges. In Torelló it caused 46 deaths and fifteen missing and made it necessary to rebuild whole quarters; in Manlleu the disaster led to the creation of the Gràcia quarter to rehouse those affected.
