Sant Vicenç de Torelló
Village
Sant Vicenç de Torelló is a municipality in the Osona comarca, in the province of Barcelona, located in the valley of the Ges river and covering only 6.6 km², which includes the textile colonies of Vila-seca and Borgonyà. It has 2,117 inhabitants (INE 2025). The main settlement grew up around the Romanesque church of San Vicente, documented from 1059, beside Torelló Castle, known since 881. The textile colony of Borgonyà, on the banks of the Ter river, was founded on 4 September 1893 by the Nuevas Hilaturas del Ter, a subsidiary of the Scottish firm J&P Coats, which gave it a strong character of its own, with hierarchically arranged housing, a church opened in 1898 and schools, and it closed in 1999, although the factory area is being redeveloped.
Colònia Borgonyà
Historical milestone
The Colònia Borgonyà, in Sant Vicenç de Torelló, is one of the largest and most emblematic textile colonies on the Ter, known as the “colònia dels Anglesos” despite the Scottish origin of its founders, the Coats family, later joined by the Catalan Fabra family. Nuevas Hilaturas del Ter was formed on 4 September 1893 as a subsidiary of the Scottish firms J&P Coats and Clark & Co, and built its factory next to the second water drop on the Ter; by the end of 1896 it was running at full capacity with 403 workers, 18 of them British. The place name comes from an old farmhouse and a Marian shrine from the late 13th century. With hierarchically arranged housing, a school and a church dating from 1898, it took on a markedly British town-planning character. It produced until 1999 and has been a cultural asset of national interest since 2013.
