Les Masies de Roda
Village
Les Masies de Roda is a municipality in the Osona comarca, in the province of Barcelona, home to the Romanesque monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres and the Iberian and medieval site of l'Esquerda; its territory surrounds that of Roda de Ter and is made up of masies and four scattered districts. The municipality was formed on 15 July 1815, when Roda de Ter separated from the old joint territory of Sant Pere de Roda. It also preserves the ruins of the castle of Savellana, from 1067, the church of Santa Magdalena de Conangle, from around 1231, and an 18th-century ice well. In 1978 the text of the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia, approved the following year, was drafted at the Parador Nacional de Turismo de Vic, next to the Sau reservoir. It has 758 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres
Monument
The monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres is a former Romanesque Benedictine monastery of the 11th century, the only one of this order in Osona, situated on a very pronounced meander of the river Ter, today half surrounded by the Sau reservoir. It was erected under the patronage of Viscountess Ermetruit, who received the domain of Casserres from Count Ramon Borrell of Barcelona; work began in 1006, the community settled there in 1012, and the present great basilica was consecrated in 1050. Before the monastery, a castle stood on the same site, documented from the year 898, with a chapel dedicated to San Pedro which the viscounts decided to turn into a monastery. Viscounts and noble families of the comarca, such as the Tavertet or the Cabrera, supported the monastery with donations until the 12th century, and some had themselves buried there.
Castle of Casserres
Monument
The castle of Casserres, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), stands in the district of Les Masies de Roda, on the inner side of a very pronounced meander of the river Ter, today half surrounded by the Sau reservoir. It was a castell termenat, whose governor also exercised jurisdiction over the surrounding territory, documented from the year 898. Of the original castle only a thick wall remains, closing off access to the peninsula on which the monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres stands; it is known as the Carolingian wall, built in opus spicatum. Before the monastery was founded, in 1006, there was on this site a chapel dedicated to San Pedro within the castle precinct, which the viscounts of Osona decided to turn into a monastery.
L'Esquerda
Monument
The site of L'Esquerda occupies a 12-hectare peninsula traced by the river Ter between the districts of Roda de Ter and Les Masies de Roda, in Osona, with occupation from the 8th century BC to the 14th century AD. In the 5th-4th centuries BC an Iberian oppidum was built there, protected by a wall closing off the only possible approach, with a pottery workshop and a metalworking one arranged around a long street; at the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 2nd century BC, a fire destroyed much of its structures, including the wall. Systematic excavations began in 1977, led by a team from the University of Barcelona headed by Dr I. Ollich; since 1982 the Iberian sector has also been excavated, where the latest campaigns have brought to light an early medieval silo field.
Castle of s'Avellana
Monument
The castle of s'Avellana, declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), is documented from the year 1067 in the district of Les Masies de Roda, in Osona. Of the old fortress important remains survive of walls, the base of a tower, and a staircase cut into the very rock on which the castle stands.
Iberian Settlement of l'Esquerda
Curiosity
Archaeological site located in a 12-hectare meander formed by the river Ter, in les Masies de Roda (Osona), with intermittent occupation from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages. The first settlements date from the 8th century BC; between the 5th and 4th centuries BC a large walled Iberian oppidum was built, with pottery and metalworking workshops; there followed a Visigothic occupation with fields of silos, watchtowers from the Carolingian period and, between the 10th and 14th centuries, an early medieval settlement with the Romanesque church of Sant Pere de Roda, consecrated in 1042, and a necropolis of anthropomorphic tombs cut into the rock. The materials found are displayed in the Museu Arqueològic de l'Esquerda, in Roda de Ter.
