What to see and do in Folgueroles

Folgueroles
Village
Folgueroles is a town in the Osona comarca, in the province of Barcelona, straddling the Plana de Vic and the Guilleries massif, with 2,262 inhabitants. The terrain is gentle toward the west, dotted with masies, and becomes rugged toward the east, with ravines down which streams such as that of Folgueroles flow. The name comes from the Catalan falguera, fern, already documented in the year 898. Its inhabitants lived from agriculture, supplemented until the 19th century by domestic textile industry and the stonemason's trade, thanks to the quarries of soft sandstone highly prized in construction. Folgueroles is the birthplace of the poet Jacint Verdaguer, and preserves the Torre Morgadès and the Castellet.
El Castellet of Folgueroles
Monument
An Iberian site on a hill near Folgueroles (Osona), declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). It consists of a 65-metre-long wall with a rectangular tower measuring 6.3 by 13 metres, which protected ten domestic rooms of about 5 by 6.5 metres, separated by walls 1.3 metres thick and built of stone slabs and local sandstone blocks, with light roofs of branches and mud. Its chronology, around the 3rd century BC, was confirmed by the discovery of Emporitan drachmas, silver coins minted at Empúries, and black-glaze pottery from the workshops of Roses. Excavated since 1960 by the Episcopal Museum of Vic, a small ironworking workshop was documented in one of its areas, and in front of several rooms there was a paved courtyard for communal use.

Birthplace of Jacint Verdaguer
Historical milestone
Jacint Verdaguer was born in Folgueroles on 17 May 1845, the second of eight siblings, of whom only three survived. His father, Josep Verdaguer i Ordeix, was a master builder and farmer; his mother, Josepa Santaló i Planas, a devout woman fond of reading, had a great influence on him, steering him toward the priesthood and toward literature -the poet himself wrote that it was she who, with her milk, made him suckle poetry-. As a child he attended the school opposite the family home, on the present-day plaça Verdaguer, before beginning his studies at the Seminary of Vic in 1855. His birthplace has functioned as a house-museum since 1967 and preserves 19th-century furniture, the parish baptismal font and material about the author of L'Atlàntida (1877) and Canigó (1886).
