What to see and do in Roda de Ter

Roda de Ter
Village
Roda de Ter is a town on the banks of the Ter river, in the Osona comarca, known for the poet Miquel Martí i Pol, with 6937 inhabitants. It is the second-smallest municipality in the comarca and is almost entirely surrounded by that of Les Masies de Roda, with which it once formed a single territory. It has traditionally been an industrial town, with a notable textile industry that harnessed the river's water power; the old La Blava factory still stands from that period. The settlement originated in the Iberian village of l'Esquerda, abandoned in the early fourteenth century, when its inhabitants moved beside the bridge over the Ter, today's Pont Vell. Walking through Roda de Ter, one can also see the parish church of Sant Pere.
Ter River through Osona
Nature
Stretch of the river Ter that crosses the Osona plain, from Torelló to Manlleu and Roda de Ter, within the north-south course the river follows from its source to the north of the Vic plain itself. Through the comarca it also flows through Montesquiu, Sant Quirze de Besora, Orís, Borgonyà, les Masies de Voltregà, la Gleva and les Masies de Roda, and receives the waters of tributaries such as the Ges, which in turn gathers those of the riu Fornés.
Roda de Ter Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major de Roda de Ter, birthplace of Miquel Martí i Pol, features among its protagonists the giants Arnal and Violant, who represent the barons of Savassona. Built in 1952 by the Barcelona workshop El Ingenio, they were unveiled at that same Festa Major: Arnal is 4 metres tall, weighs 62 kilos and carries a falcon on his arm, while Violant, at 3.75 metres and 50 kilos, carries a bouquet of flowers and a wedding ring. The original mould was broken when they were made, making them one-of-a-kind pieces; today they are managed by the Colla Gegantera de Roda de Ter.
La Blava and the poetry of Miquel Martí i Pol
Historical milestone
Miquel Martí i Pol was born in Roda de Ter, beside the river Ter in the Osona county, on 19 March 1929, into a humble family, and studied at the village school until he was fourteen, when he went to work at the Tecla Sala textile factory, known as La Blava. There he began writing poems, first in Spanish and, from 1946, in Catalan; pulmonary tuberculosis in 1948 kept him bedridden for a year, a time during which he discovered the great Catalan poets and turned his work toward social poetry. In 1969 the first symptoms of the multiple sclerosis that would accompany him for the rest of his life appeared, and in 1973 it forced him to leave the factory. He lived in Roda de Ter until his death in Vic on 11 November 2003, having become the most widely read living Catalan poet of his time.
