Castle of Casserres Monument · les Masies de Roda, Osona, Barcelona Image of les Masies de Roda, not of the place itself. The castle of Casserres, declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), stands in the district of Les Masies de Roda, on the inner side of a very pronounced meander of the river Ter, today half surrounded by the Sau reservoir. It was a castell termenat, whose governor also exercised jurisdiction over the surrounding territory, documented from the year 898. Of the original castle only a thick wall remains, closing off access to the peninsula on which the monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres stands; it is known as the Carolingian wall, built in opus spicatum. Before the monastery was founded, in 1006, there was on this site a chapel dedicated to San Pedro within the castle precinct, which the viscounts of Osona decided to turn into a monastery.
