What to see and do in Gurb

Gurb
Village
Gurb is a municipality in Osona, in Barcelona province, in the Plana de Vic and bordering that city, with 2,741 inhabitants (INE 2025), most of whom live in masies scattered across the municipality's four parishes: Sant Andreu de Gurb, Sant Julià Sassorba, Sant Cristòfol de Vespella and Sant Esteve de Granollers de la Plana. Documented since the year 886, it had its centre at the castle of Gurb, atop the hill called la Creu de Gurb, behind the old church of Sant Andreu. Its capital, the settlement of l'Esperança, has become an industrial expansion zone of Vic, with companies such as Casa Tarradellas. It also preserves the castles of Gurb and Vilagelans, and the Bosc Encantat (Enchanted Forest).
Castle of Gurb
Monument
A castle standing at the highest point (841 m) of the municipality of Gurb (Osona), behind the old parish church of Sant Andreu, crowned by a large iron cross and declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). Only the wall bases of a circular tower and a cistern survive, along with fragments of rampart and the springing of an arch, found in a 1968 excavation carried out by residents of Gurb, which also brought to light the remains of the chapel of Sant Esteve, which had its own chaplain in 1321. Vic's records mention the castrum Gorbi from the year 886; from 942 it was held by the comital viguier Ansulf, who until 990 bought freehold lands (alodis) in the district from Count Borrell to enlarge the family estate. After its decline, already evident by the 14th century, it passed into the hands of the Queralt family.
Castle of Vilagelans
Monument
The castell de Vilagelans stands in the district of Gurb (Osona), and is declared bien cultural de interés nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection). Documented since the year 1012, when the archdeacon-levite Seniofred bequeathed the tower to the bishop of Vic, it belonged to the Vilagelans family, documented since 999 and castellans of the castle of Gurb; in 1059 it was ceded to Ponç de Cabrera. On the original site a square-plan casal with small towers was built in the 16th century, next to which survives the chapel of Santa Fe, of much-altered Romanesque plan. In 1920, already in the 20th century, an annex with a central tower was added, giving the complex its present appearance.
