What to see and do in Bustillo del Páramo de Carrión

Bustillo del Páramo de Carrión
Village
Bustillo del Páramo de Carrión is a hamlet in Palencia beside the Camino de Santiago, running parallel to the N-120 between Osorno and Sahagún, and to the old Cañada Real Leonesa. Its name comes from busto, a small pasture won from the woodland by controlled burning, and it is already recorded in the 13th century as Bustiello; it took its current name in 1916, to distinguish it from other places of the same name. Nearby there were once two deserted villages, Rebolleda and Ponzonava, and a pilgrim hospital of the confraternity of Nuestra Señora la Blanca. Its church of San Andrés Apóstol, with three naves, groin vaults and three domes over the crossing, houses carvings from the 14th to the 18th century, among them a 16th-century crucifix and statues of San Andrés and San José on the main altarpiece. It now has about sixty inhabitants.

Monument
The church of San Andrés Apóstol is the parish church of Bustillo del Páramo de Carrión, a Palencia village of fifty-eight residents set on flat ground in the Páramo Leonés district, on the old Cañada Real Leonesa and on the French Camino de Santiago. Its construction began in 1650 and was completed in 1737; in the early 21st century it was restored with the help of the residents themselves. It is a three-nave church with groin vaults decorated with Baroque plasterwork and three domes over the crossing, and it holds imagery from the 14th to the 18th century across its six altars: among other pieces, altarpieces with sculptures of San Joaquín, Santa Ana and the Assumption, a rococo-style Nazareno, and a 14th-century Gothic sculpture of San Pablo.

Nature
The district of Bustillo del Páramo de Carrión, in the middle of the Palencia páramo, is crossed by the Cañada Real Leonesa Oriental, a drovers' road some 700 kilometres long that rises at the Montaña de Riaño, in the province of León, and ends at Montemolín, south of Badajoz, also crossing Valladolid, Segovia, Ávila and Toledo. Alongside it runs the corridor of the Camino de Santiago, which runs parallel to the N-120 road and links Osorno with Sahagún; near the village once stood the depopulated hamlets of Rebolleda and Ponzonava, and the old Hospital Blanco, run by the confraternity of Nuestra Señora la Blanca, sheltered for centuries the pilgrims who passed through these lands.
