Nogal de las Huertas
Village
Nogal de las Huertas is a hamlet in the Palencia part of Tierra de Campos, 47 kilometres from the provincial capital, which includes the hamlet of Población de Soto. It holds the monastery of San Salvador, founded in 1063 by Countess Elvira Sánchez and considered the oldest Romanesque monument in Palencia; today its vaults have collapsed, the floor has disappeared except for a paved stretch, and vegetation is gradually consuming what remains of the building, despite some insufficient emergency repairs. It is included in the Red List of Heritage at Risk of the Hispania Nostra foundation. The village's old schools have been converted into a church. With around forty-five inhabitants, it was the birthplace of the Dominican friar Miguel Gonzalo Liquete.
