Calzada de los Molinos
Village
Calzada de los Molinos is a village of about 305 inhabitants at 830 metres of altitude, in the Tierra de Campos comarca, which owes its name to the Roman roads that crossed it and is recorded as early as 1176. Its origin goes back to the reign of Sancho II of Castile, when the settlement was located next to the present-day Abadía de Benevívere, now in private hands, before moving to its current site. Set on the Camino de Santiago, the Jacobean scallop shell appears on façades, monuments and its own coat of arms. Its church of Santiago, the only temple still standing in the village, combines Romanesque and Mudéjar styles under a notable coffered ceiling; before it, a hermitage once stood on the site, close to the village's most important river mill.
