Villamoronta
Village
Villamoronta is a village in the comarca of Vega-Valdavia, in the province of Palencia, at 843 metres above sea level. According to tradition, it was resettled around the years 870-919 by Mauronta or Moronta and his people, who came from the Cantabrian mountains around Santillana del Mar, from whom it took its name. Within its territory, near the river Carrión, stood the medieval deserted village of la Rebolleda, and the seated image of the Virgin from an old hermitage dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Antigua is preserved in the church of San Pelayo. It was the birthplace of Tomás Montes, crucified in 1812 by French troops, and of the bullfighter Marcos de Celis. It lives on livestock farming and agriculture, and is among the province's largest producers of cow's milk; its jota is among the best known in Palencia. It has 236 inhabitants.
