La Serna
Village
La Serna is a village of about ninety inhabitants in the comarca of Vega-Valdavia (Palencia), ten kilometres from Carrión de los Condes, beside the river Carrión, with a walkway along its bank. Its name comes from the Celtic “senara”, the section into which a sown field was divided. It preserves the ruins of the Romanesque monastery of Nogal de las Huertas, from the year 1063, the oldest in the province. Its community photovoltaic installation, La Serna Solar, set up together with the residents, produces close to 720,000 kilowatt-hours a year. It celebrates its patronal feasts on 15 May, for San Isidro, and on 16 August, for San Roque; among its notable residents was Sancha López, in the 12th century the nurse of Blanche of Castile, Castilian infanta and queen of France.
