What to see and do in Valmojado

Valmojado
Village
Valmojado is a municipality in the comarca of La Sagra, in Toledo, with 4,898 inhabitants, whose place name is first documented on 13 December 1449; it may refer to a valley rich in water, or derive from «Valle Majada» ('sheepfold valley'), after the sheepfolds where flocks were gathered along the stock route that still crosses the municipal area, the Cañada Real Segoviana, the very origin of the village. It preserves a group of springs, the Cinco Fuentes, and the Valdeniebla dehesa, with a quejigar (a stand of Portuguese oaks) surviving from wetter eras, a refuge for more than 160 species. Its church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, patron of the town, was built between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, and in early September it holds festivities of regional renown, with Valencian-style fireworks and fire bulls.
Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán de Valmojado
Monument
Temple in Valmojado (Toledo) built between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, dedicated to Santo Domingo de Guzmán, patron of the town, on the hill where don Gonzalo Chacón, lord of Casarrubios, had previously erected a gallows. Of basilical plan, with three naves and a transept, it preserves old images of Nuestra Señora del Carmen and San Juan Bautista, the work of the Carmelite friar Joseph Ortiz Delgado in 1748. Its south door, called that of the Santísimo Cristo del Amparo, is the work of the Toledan sculptor Mariano Guerrero Corrales.
The Five Fountains of Valmojado
Nature
Group of springs with underground galleries documented for eight centuries, which historically supplied the town. It is also known as Quinque Fontes and consists of five spouts: Caño Fresco, Caño Indiano, Caño de la Teja, Caño de la Salud and Caño de Méntrida, each fed by its own underground conduit, one of them 1.1 kilometres long. Nearby is the Fuente del Caño Viejo, one of the oldest water points in Valmojado, documented since the 18th century.
Cañada Real Segoviana as it passes through Valmojado
Nature
Historic droving route that crosses the municipal area of Valmojado and that was essential for transhumance between the sierra and the pastures of the south. Its course attests to the old livestock pass and gateway that gave rise to the town itself, documented by remains of road infrastructure and by archaeological, epigraphic and toponymic references. A privilege of 1208 that mentions the place of Portillejo could be the first written allusion to this livestock pass located on the cañada.
Tower of el molino de viento de Valmojado
Monument
Cylindrical tower clad in brick, situated at one of the highest points in Valmojado. Documents from the 16th century place in the area a small fortification, a silo and a lodging place for the guards of the city of Segovia. It has visual contact with the remains of another tower of the same characteristics in Casarrubios del Monte, three kilometres away. Specialists do not rule out a defensive origin, later reused as a sheepfold, silo, dovecote or windmill, although there are no reliable references confirming this last use, which remains a matter of debate among local scholars.
Firework Festivities of Valmojado
Activity
Valmojado's (Toledo) fireworks fiestas have been organised since 1979 by the A.R.C. Pirotécnica La Alegría, founded by Manuel Albín Luque and other Valencians settled in the village, in honour of the Virgen de las Misericordias, on the first weekend of September. They combine Castilian toros de fuego with Valencian pyrotechnic customs such as the fireworks castle, the cordà, the despertà and one of the region's most important mascletà. Valmojado's fondness for pyrotechnics has been documented for almost three centuries: in 1725 the municipal books already recorded spending on rockets for the feast of Santo Domingo. Because of this mixture of traditions, the village is known as the Valencia of La Sagra or the little Valencia.
Los Mayordomos de Valmojado
Activity
Easter tradition of Valmojado in which four young people from the village, two boys and two girls, called mayordomos, collect money and goods door to door throughout the year so that, on Easter Monday or Lamb's Day, they can wash and adorn a ewe and a lamb and parade them through the streets to the square, where the day ends with a popular dance. Its origins link the Mesta tradition with the extinct Santísimo Sacramento confraternity (16th century).
