What to see and do in Chozas de Canales

Chozas de Canales
Village
Chozas de Canales is a municipality in the comarca of La Sagra, in the province of Toledo, with 5,044 inhabitants (INE 2025), whose name recalls the residents of Canales who built the first huts of the settlement here. Its lordship was acquired in the 17th century by Pedro Coloma y Escolano, secretary of state to Philip IV, who received the viscountcy of Canales y Chozas in 1680. Due to its closeness to Madrid, construction and services have gained weight over the traditional farming and livestock economy, and dry-farmed vines are turned into wine at the Santa María Magdalena Cooperative. It preserves the parish church of Santa María Magdalena, patroness of the town, and the hermitage of the Cristo de la Misericordia, in whose honour the first-weekend-of-May festival is celebrated.

The Viscounty of Canales y Chozas
Curiosity
In the 17th century, Pedro Coloma y Escolano, secretary of state to Philip IV, acquired the depopulated settlements of Canales and Regachuelo along with the villages of Chozas and Yunclillos, and in 1680 received the viscountcy of Canales y Chozas, with which he established an entailed estate (mayorazgo). When his heirs died out, the lands passed to the bishopric of Calahorra and La Calzada; at the end of the 18th century a manor house from the time of the marquisate was still preserved there.
