What to see and do in Villamanta

Villamanta
Village
Villamanta is a village of about 2,900 inhabitants situated at 558 metres above sea level, which some scholars, among them Armin Stylow, identify with the Mantua Carpetanorum cited by Ptolomeo in his Geography. Its church of Santa Catalina de Alejandría preserves relics of Pope Saint Damasus I, whom local tradition holds to have been born in this town, as well as relics of santa Maravillas. In the mid-19th century it had 285 inhabitants. The village's public school, the CEIP San Dámaso, takes its name from that same pope, whose memory is kept alive in the parish where his relic is venerated.

Monument
A Renaissance church of the 16th and 17th centuries with a tower at the west end and an octagonal apse braced by buttresses, built in masonry banded with brick; the master stonemason Juan Francés worked on it.

Curiosity
The village's name points back to the Carpetani town that Ptolemy mentioned in his Geography; from its municipal district come a votive altar to the Lares, funerary inscriptions from the 1st to the 3rd centuries and five Roman steles found at the El Tejar site.

Historical milestone
Villamanta preserves the region's second-largest collection of Roman inscriptions after Complutum, with votive and funerary altars; the mention of the Quirina tribe suggests that the settlement, identified with Mantua Carpetanorum, obtained municipal status in the Flavian period, between the years 69 and 96.
