What to see and do in Casarrubios del Monte

Casarrubios del Monte
Village
Municipality of the comarca of La Sagra, in the province of Toledo, documented in 1207 as Casar Rubeus, the red hamlet, and resettled within the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra of Segovia until Alfonso XI handed it over in 1331 to the infante Alfonso de la Cerda; from that seigneurial period comes its Mudéjar castle of the first half of the fourteenth century, unusual in the province for its brick fabric, accompanied by the Herreran church of la Natividad, blessed in 1564.
Castle of Casarrubios del Monte
Monument
Fortress from the first half of the 14th century in Mudejar style, unusual in the province of Toledo for its brick construction.
Church of la Natividad de Nuestra Señora
Monument
The church of the Natividad de Nuestra Señora, also known as the church of Santa María, in Casarrubios del Monte (La Sagra, Toledo). It was blessed in 1564, although its completion came somewhat later, and it was built in Herrerian style. It preserves a Gothic panel of the Virgen de la Rosa, the canvas of the Nativity of the Virgin by the Toledan painter Antón Pizarro, and The Annunciation by the Aragonese painter Jusepe Leonardo. It also houses a large painting of the Martyrdom of San Andrés, from the main altarpiece of the now-vanished church of San Andrés, painted by Francisco Ignacio Ruiz de la Iglesia from an unfinished sketch by Sebastián Muñoz, a painter of the Madrid school possibly born in Casarrubios.
Pillory of Casarrubios del Monte
Monument
A 15th-century pillory, or pillar of justice, in late Gothic style, a symbol of the town's manorial jurisdiction.
Ruins of the Church of San Andrés
Monument
The ruins of the church of San Andrés, in Casarrubios del Monte (Toledo), belong to a building whose origin dates back to the 14th century and which was destroyed by a fire caused by lightning in 1825. Before its destruction it housed a large painting of the Martyrdom of San Andrés, a work by Francisco Ignacio Ruiz de la Iglesia, which was saved from the fire and is preserved today in the church of Santa María in the same town.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Salud de Casarrubios
Monument
Sanctuary dedicated to the Virgen de la Salud, whose celebration opens the local festive calendar on the first Sunday in May.
Festivities of Nuestra Señora de Gracia
Activity
The patronal festivities of Nuestra Señora de Gracia are celebrated in Casarrubios del Monte every 13 September, in honor of the town's patron saint, with nighttime and daytime encierros and a cultural week held in the days leading up to the main date.
The meeting of Enrique IV and Isabel
Historical milestone
On 22 September 1468 King Enrique IV and his half-sister Isabel stopped in the town to rest and to close the agreements reached at the Toros de Guisando, with which the civil confrontation over the succession of Castile was brought to an end.
Casar Rubeus and the land of Segovia
Historical milestone
The name appears for the first time in 1207 as Casar Rubeus, the red farmstead, from the colour of the soil. After the reconquest by Alfonso VI the place was resettled within the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra of Segovia, not that of Toledo.
The passing to the infante Alfonso de la Cerda
Historical milestone
In 1331 Alfonso XI detached the town from the Segovian common lands and handed it to the infante Alfonso de la Cerda. So began a long succession of lords that went on until the eighteenth century and that left the Mudéjar castle as its testimony.
Stewed hare
Food and drink
Slow stew of hare with onion, wine and bay leaf that makes use of the small game of the woods in the north of the comarca. It is served very well done, with the meat falling from the bone, and it was a seasonal dish after the autumn drives.
