Paniza
Village
Paniza is a wine-growing municipality in the Campo de Cariñena, in the province of Zaragoza, with 574 inhabitants (INE 2025), on the foothills of the Sierra del Águila, 6 km from Cariñena. It was crown land reconquered around 1127 by Alfonso I the Battler and made a village in 1294; in the 14th century it passed as a lordship to the Jiménez de Urrea family and later to the Community of villages of Daroca. It is the birthplace of Ramón Gayán, who organised the battalion of Escopeteros y Tiradores de Cariñena during the Peninsular War, when Suchet's troops razed the shrine of the Virgen del Águila, rebuilt by residents in 1824. Its cooperative brings together the vineyards at the highest altitude within the Denomination of Origin, with plots at 850 metres and century-old grenache vines.
