What to see and do in Tosos

Tosos
Village
Tosos is a municipality in the Campo de Cariñena district, in the province of Zaragoza, situated at 585 metres above sea level on the banks of the Huerva river, 50 kilometres south of the capital; it has a population of 176 inhabitants. Its wines fall under the Cariñena Protected Denomination of Origin, and it has an organic winery, the first in Aragon dedicated exclusively to this crop. Its municipal area preserves the Torre de la Casaza, or castle of la Casaza, a medieval watchtower beside the bed of the Huerva, and the remains of the castillo del Santo or del Alcañicejo. The patron saint festivities, in honour of San Bartolomé, are celebrated on 24 August, and the following Saturday sees the traditional Día de la Vaca.
Tower of la Casaza
Monument
La Casaza is a fortified watchtower situated above the present-day Torcas reservoir, in the municipality of Tosos, two kilometres from the village, on what was once the course of the río Huerva. It has two volumes of irregular heptagonal plan in masonry, up to three storeys high, separated by a thick wall with a window and a lowered-arch doorway, and it preserves traces of an underground passage connected to an outer walled enclosure, which suggests it may have served as a castle-refuge. At its foot lie the remains of a settlement inhabited since Celtiberian times and abandoned in the 14th century. Together with another tower, it formed part of a medieval defensive line and appears on the list of castles declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) of Aragón.
Castle of el Alcañicejo
Monument
The castle of Alcañicejo, also known as the castillo del Santo, stands in the deserted hamlet of Alcañicejo, in the municipality of Tosos, where in the Middle Ages it controlled the crossing of the río Huerva. Andalusi Muslim sources already mention it in the year 878, as a waypoint in an expedition against Zaragoza. It was reconquered by Alfonso I the Battler, who in 1124 gave it to the brothers Fruela and Pelayo, and over the centuries it changed hands several times: it was bought by the Comunidad de Daroca in 1348, passed to Ximeno de Bailo in 1364 by grant of Peter the Ceremonious, and its last royal rights were sold in 1371 to Juan Fernández de Heredia. By the mid-19th century it was already described as a pardina of the municipality of Tosos. Its remains today form part of the listed heritage of the municipality.
Festivities of invierno de Tosos
Activity
Tosos's winter festival is held in a village on the banks of the Huerva whose main festival, in honour of San Bartolomé, runs for four or five days from 24 August; the castillo de la Casaza served in the Middle Ages as one of the two signal watchtowers of the district.
Landscape of the Sierra de Algairén in Tosos
Nature
Tosos sits on the left bank of the Huerva, in the Campo de Cariñena, surrounded by vineyards and with the sierra de Algairén as a backdrop; from the Torreón de la Lisalta, within its district, a landscape of ochre and reddish tones dotted with scrub can be seen beneath the presence of the mountains.
