Ramón Gayán y Díaz, born in this town, organised during the War of Independence the battalion of Escopeteros y Tiradores de Cariñena. The troops of Marshal Suchet destroyed the sanctuary of the Virgen del Águila, which the residents rebuilt in 1824.
