What to see and do in Encinacorba

Encinacorba
Village
Encinacorba is a municipality of the Campo de Cariñena, in Zaragoza, at 762 metres of altitude, 7 km from Cariñena and at the foot of the Sierra de Algairén. In 1176 the bishop of Zaragoza granted the place to the Templars on condition that they repopulate it, which they did the following year, under the fueros (charter laws) of Zaragoza; when the order was dissolved in 1317, the commandery passed to the Hospitallers of Amposta. The botanist Mariano Lagasca, director of the Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid, and the Cervantes scholar and bibliographer Juan Antonio Pellicer were born here. Its church of Santa María, Gothic-Renaissance from the 16th century, in brick over an old hospitaller palace, preserves a 13th-century Romanesque-Gothic Christ and a 14th-century alabaster carving of the Virgen del Mar, its patron saint. A wine area with the Cariñena Denomination of Origin, it has 176 inhabitants.

The botanist Mariano Lagasca
Historical milestone
Manuel Mariano Lagasca y Segura was born in Encinacorba (Campo de Cariñena) on 4 October 1776 and died in Barcelona in 1839. He studied medicine in Zaragoza, Valencia and Madrid, where he was a disciple of Cavanilles; on the latter's death he was appointed vice-professor of botany at the Royal Botanical Garden in 1806 and professor of Medical Botany in 1807, and after the War of Independence he took over its direction, a post he held with great prestige between 1815 and 1823, describing numerous species of the peninsular flora. A deputy in the Cortes of the Trienio Liberal, his liberalism forced him into exile in 1823, losing his herbarium and manuscripts; he worked in London and Jersey until returning in 1834, reinstated in his post until his death. In the same town the bibliographer and Cervantes scholar Juan Antonio Pellicer was born.
Bush-trained vineyard on the Algairén slope
Food and drink
The district, between the sierra de Algairén and the plain, produces grapes covered by the Cariñena Designation of Origin. Garnacha predominates in old vines trained as bushes and of low yield, the basis of the reds of the high, cold strip of the comarca.
