Paniza's winter festival is held in the birthplace of Ramón Gayán, who during the Peninsular War organised the battalion of Escopeteros y Tiradores de Cariñena after Suchet's troops razed the santuario de la Virgen del Águila, rebuilt by the residents in 1824.
