What to see and do in Valjunquera

Valjunquera
Village
Valjunquera is a municipality in the Teruel comarca of Matarraña, at 552 metres above sea level and with 336 inhabitants across 41.84 km²; its name comes from the Latin “valley of rushes”. The municipal district brings together at least three Iberian sites: Mirablanc, on the sierra of the same name, occupied between 500 and 50 BC and discovered in 1916, where the layout of houses and remains of a wall can be seen; El Castellar or Mas del Labrador, from the 5th century BC; and Lliri. The town, once walled, was founded by the Arabs and, after the Christian conquest, passed to the Order of Calatrava, of which it preserves remains of the old wall. The frost of 1957, which destroyed the olive groves, accelerated the rural exodus of the following decades.
Church of Valjunquera
Monument
Parish church of San Miguel de Valjunquera, in the Matarraña area of the province of Teruel, whose first stone was laid on 7 March 1734 and which was completed in 1747, after thirteen years of building work. It is an 18th-century Baroque building typical of the Bajo Aragón, with a hall-church plan of three naves of equal height; in the transept, aligned with the rest of the structure, a double cruciform pillar stands out, continuing with a fragment of a large entablature and a small pillar. The town preserves remains of its old wall from the Calatrava period and three Iberian archaeological sites within its municipality.
