What to see and do in La Codoñera

La Codoñera
Village
La Codoñera is a municipality of the Bajo Aragón, in Teruel, at 501 metres above sea level, beside the Mezquín river and at the foot of the Santa Bárbara hill. Its name comes from the Catalan codonyer, the quince tree. There are human remains from the Eneolithic, around 3000 BC, and an Iberian settlement on the cabezo de Santa Bárbara. The first written reference to the settlement dates from 1225, as a hamlet dependent on Alcañiz and on the Grand Commandery of Calatrava. In 1624 it achieved a degree of municipal autonomy, and on 21 May 1776 Charles III granted it the title of town, since it then had two hundred residents, separating it from Alcañiz. Its church, dedicated to Santa María, is already mentioned in 1280 and preserves a tower of ashlar and brick.
