What to see and do in Torre del Compte

Torre del Compte
Village
Torre del Compte, la Torre del Comte in Catalan, is a municipality of Teruel in the Matarraña comarca, at 497 metres above sea level and with 120 inhabitants, of an eminently agricultural character: most of its residents work the land, devoted to cherry and peach trees in the narrow but fertile plain of the Matarraña river, with the Puertos de Beceite in the background. Its origins go back to the 12th century, when it arose around a fortified tower built by Ramon Berenguer IV to contain the Muslims; after a period of lay lordship it passed into the hands of the Church in 1307 until the disentailments of the 19th century. It had its own station on the Val de Zafán railway line, opened in 1942 and closed in 1973 due to the scant traffic it carried.
